Welcome to this module on a day in the life
of a Scrum Master. After watching this video, you'll be able to summarize critical tasks a Scrum
Master must perform on a daily basis and to find challenges the Scrum Master may encounter and how
to overcome them. A Scrum Master has
various responsibilities. While each day brings
new challenges, there are standard tasks a Scrum Master must
accomplish in a day. Let us review some
of these key duties. The Scrum Master facilitates
the daily stand up meeting. This is often referred to as a daily scrum
meeting as well. This is normally done first
thing in the morning. The three questions asked are what each team
member did yesterday, what they will do today, and are there any
blockers or impediments? The Scrum Master must ensure
that every team member participates in response
to the three questions. During the meeting, the
Scrum Master tries to ensure that all team members
have worked to perform. In addition, the Scrum
Master must take action in a variety of areas based on the
result of this meeting. During the stand-up meeting, the Scrum Master encouraged as each team member to update their portion of
the Kanban board, all burn down charts must be maintained for the sprint
and are updated at the conclusion of the
meeting as well to show progress and determine how
the team is progressing. If the sprint has issues, the Scrum Master works
to resolve them. If there are
conflicts or issues, the Scrum Master
immediately ensures the impact of team members
work together to resolve them. The Scrum Master tries to encourage the team
to self-correct and resolve all conflicts internally to the greatest extent possible. If the Scrum Master support
is needed, they get involved. It is important to note
that conflicts are not resolved during the
daily stand up meeting. The Scrum Master than
addresses any blockers. The goal is to resolve the blockers as
quickly as possible. This may entail
working closely with the product donor or other key stakeholders
in the organization. The Scrum Master also act as
a coach whenever possible, the Scrum Master shares
information, guidance, and provide support to any
and all members of the team. The Scrum Master is
a servant leader. They put the needs of
others ahead of self. Every Scrum Master takes
pride in preparing junior team members to both understand and assume
the role in the future. The Scrum Master is also
a master event planner. They make the team ready for any ceremonies planned
in the near term. Along with the daily
stand-up key ceremonies including sprint planning,
demos, and retrospectives. The Scrum Master
may need to spend time assisting the
product owner to refine the product
backlog and ensure it is ready for the next
iteration or sprint. A best practice is to have all user stories for the next two sprints
ready for implementation. The scrum master has a number
of challenges to overcome. A Scrum Master has
critical responsibilities and often minimal authority
to accomplish them. A Scrum Master needs to
establish themselves as a subject matter expert
within the organization, along with the trust and
credibility with the team. They have to wield influence on the team without much authority. A sprint is time-bound. Unlike a traditional project, the length of the sprint is
set and cannot be extended. They must work closely
with the team to ensure all tasks are
completed on time. There may be times when
the team is virtual. This makes coordination and time management even
more difficult. Keeping senior management
happy can be a real challenge. Many managers are used to traditional project
management methods and do not understand Scrum. This can lead to potential
interference and push back. A Scrum Master needs
to be capable of sharing the scrum process
with the management in a way that emphasizes the benefits and leads
to acceptance by them. Many stakeholders do not understand the role
of a Scrum Master. They assume a Scrum Master has the same job description roles as their traditional
project manager, education than patients are needed at times
to be successful. Finally, there may be times when stakeholders want to change
direction in mid sprint. When this occurs, the Scrum
Master needs to be flexible, acknowledged the
change, and update the product backlog in conjunction with
the product owner. While at the same time
doing all day cannot to disrupt the currents sprint and stay the course is planned. In this video, you learned that scrum masters roles
are very diverse. Ensure that team
stays organized, focused, and on track to satisfy the goals of the sprint, acts as a bridge between
management and the team ensuring the team has not distracted from
its primary tasks, ensures impediments
and blockers are identified early and
do all they can to resolve them and
support the team and motivate them to perform
at the highest levels.
